The invention of the compass was the most important Chinese invention. It allowed Chinese sailors to effectively navigate the seas. As a result, they could travel to distant places such as India and Egypt to conduct business. It also helped to establish China’s status as a giant in trade. It boosted the Chinese economy. Traveling to distant places also enabled the Chinese to spread their traditions and cultures to different places in the world.

1881 - president james garfield was assassinated.

1882 - the chinese exclusion act was passed.

1883 - a decision in the civil rights cases legalized racial segregation in the united states.

1887 - the dawes act was passed.

1893 - the panic of 1893 took place. (what a creative name)
