Catholic Church became powerful before the Crusades because the Romans allowed them to become so powerful that at one point in time, they became more powerful than Casaer. The reason why is because everyone was required to tithe to the Church. They were required to give 1/10th of their wealth to the Church. That included everyone from the poorest to the richest. This tithing was not taxed by Casaer and the Catholic Church became very rich.

There were a total of 4 Crusades in history. These Crusades spanned generations. The Catholic Church and the belief in one God, Heaven and Hell had become grounded in the medieval people that it was never questioned. In fact, during medieval times, it was taught that the only way to get to Heaven was if the Roman Catholic Church allowed you in.  While the Crusades failed at some of their goals, they succeeded at the most important goal. They wanted to spread their religion around Europe and into the land held by the Moors and the Ottomans. They succeeded in that.
