Santa Anna began his rise to power in the military. He learned his war tactics early. At the Battle of Medina in 1813, the Spanish general Joaquín de Arredondo defeated a filibuster army in Texas rebelling against Spanish rule. Arredondo took no prisoners. Instead, he had them executed. Santa Ana would later use this harsh tactic in the Texas Revolution. This battle would become one of the battle cry's for those individuals who fought to defeat Santa Anna.
