Describe the role of women in Texas prior to the start of the Civil War compared to after the Civil War. How do you think war in general affects the role of women in society? Do you feel the changes that occurred with the role of women in the South were positive or negative?

When the Civil War started, thousands of men left for battle, leaving the women behind to handle all aspects of maintaining a living. Prior to the Civil War, men traditionally handled ranching, farming, running plantations and running businesses. Outdoor hard labor was generally reserved for men, as was anything that was dangerous or life-threatening in nature. Women’s jobs were reserved to cooking and household duties.  In addition, women took roles in supporting the war efforts by nursing and even doing jobs that were very dangerous, such as serving as gunrunners and teamsters. War generally changes role boundaries between genders on home front efforts to survive and aid the cause.
