In the case Tinker v. Des Moines, the Court found that school officials had violated students’ right to free expression. Furthermore, the Court emphasized that neither students nor teachers can be expected to “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.” Yet, the Court has also endorsed the “comprehensive authority of school officials to prescribe and control conduct in the schools.” How can these two positions coexist?
