Well, the reason for this goes back to the days when coins were stamped in different weights to reflect the true value of the coin. To stop people from shaving the edges of the coins and melting them into new coins, minters put ridges on coins made of precious metals so that it would be easy to tell if the edges had been shaved off. It’s not really an issue today, but we still have edges on our coins.
