What was the Butler Act and what role did it play in the Scopes trial? Who supported its passage and why?

The Butler act was introduced to Tennessee in 1925 by Representative John Butler and it banned the teaching of evolution in schools. In The Scopes Trial, John Thomas Scopes was accused of referencing evolution supporting articles and books while substituting for a science class. He was brought to trial, found guilty, and forced to pay a fine of $100.  The fine was later dismissed on technicality.

People who were deeply religious at the time supported the passing of the act because they did not want the word of god to be questioned. Those who were religious and had kids were especially in favor of the act because they did not want their young, impressionable kids coming home and doubting the bible.
