The samurai were an elite class in the Japanese society as they were considered to be warriors who lived by a certain code of conduct called bushido.

They were in charge of defending the land and fighting during war times, but when there were extended periods of peace, their usefulness became to decline.

First, they were delegated other tasks such as pottery and calligraphy, but as time went on, they were not needed anymore, because of urbanization and isolationism.
