No, the United States should not continue to use the Electoral College. It is undemocratic. First, it takes a winner-take-all approach, and it cancels the votes of that were cast for the losing candidates in each state.  Another problem with the Electoral College is that five times in our nation’s history, it has permitted the election of a candidate who has not won the popular vote.  Two examples are during the 2000 election, Al Gore won the popular vote, however George W. Bush was elected and during the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, but Donald Trump was elected.

This is an opinion.  However some facts to help with the opinion include that the Electoral College was created out of a compromise during the Constitutional Convention.  It was created to prevent corruption between the members of executive and legislative branches of government. The Electoral College is also used to be a "check" on the regular citizens, because at the time of the Constitutional Convention, the Founding Father's did not necessarily have complete faith in the masses. The United States has changed since the Constitutional Convention and so has the makeup of voters. The right to vote during the Colonial and Revolutionary periods was restricted to white, Protestant, male property owners over the age of 21. Since then, there have been Constitutional Amendments that have allowed more people to vote including women, African Americans, and all members of other minorites who are citizens over the age of 18. Today our voting population is more informed also.
