What were some of the problems Texas faced that made it difficult for the United States and countries in Europe to recognize Texas as independent from Mexico?

Other countries recognized that Mexico refused to honor the Velasco Treaties and felt that there would be conflict between Texas and Mexico. Anyone siding with Texas would have to take on Mexico and Santa Anna’s army. Another factor was that slavery was a very important part of Texas lifestyle and many other countries had already outlawed slavery. They did not want to recognize Texas as a country and legalize slavery. Morfit’s survey of Texas indicated that Texas had an unstable government and an army in disarray. It was in debt and settlements were spread out over the territory which left it very vulnerable. Neither the United States nor European countries felt Texas was secure enough to resist attack and flourish.
