my name is william, and i am the duke of normandy. i believe that i have the right to the throne as it was promised to me by edward the confessor when i was a child. in 1016, king canute invaded england, and edward ran away to normandy for safety. edward stayed in normandy until he became king of england in 1042. edward invited me to his court in 1051 and promised to make me heir. i have been a successful ruler of normandy, and i believe i could be just as successful as the king of england. over the last few years i have transformed normandy into a greater military power, and as the leader of england i could make the country better, even though i am not english. i do not see why this matters, as the country where i live does not impact on my leadership skills. i am also edward’s friend and first cousin once removed, therefore i should inherit the throne by bloodline.
