Why did many Arab and East Africa merchants stay in Indian port cities?

The merchants of one port city were in competition with the merchants of another. Each merchant tried to attract a larger group of buyers and traders. The many ports were also growing independent. The rulers of each city-state grew rich from trade and from the taxes placed on goods being traded.
