Why did the framers (founding fathers) of the United States create the Electoral College?

There were a few reasons the electoral college was created.  No other country at the time elected their own top leader so there were no examples to work from.

Some Founders were worried that if Congress chose the President, then only friends of the current Congress would get placed in the top position.  This could lead to corrupt government.  Others didn't think the people should pick the President because they didn't think the rural areas would have enough knowledge of the candidates in order to pick the right person.

So a compromise was reached that would let each state choose electors who would tender the state's vote for the Presidential candidate.

The number of electors was to be based on the population of the state which was the same as the number of representatives for the House.  The south was worried that the north would control the Presidential election since there was a larger population in the north.  In order to make sure the slave holding southern states would ratify the constitution, the compromise also included a system to count slaves as a fraction of a person to determine the population.  Without the compromise, the southern states may not have ratified the constitution.
