Why do the people of Brazil speak Portuguese? Colonization gave birth to a new language that later on was adopted by Portugal.
Natives in that area spoke Portuguese before colonization.

Portugal claimed the land of Brazil by right of discovery.

The Spanish's second language is Portuguese.

Italy passed on the lad to the French which later on allowed the language to remain as the land's native and official language.
