Because they started the battle with each other by one of the crowds say fire even THEIR british captian or leader didn't say fire which caused the british soliders to shoot fire then everyone started yelling, panicking, and getting scared cause they got mixed up cause they thought there was a fire even tho it was in the cold but people though there was fire or they heard shotguns of fire.
