Spain ruled Mexico, and Texas was part of Mexico in the 1700s. France had begun to develop settlements in Louisiana. With an enemy on its eastern flank, Spain had to increase its grip on Texas. To encourage settlement, the Spanish government offered huge land grants for little or no cost to Spanish citizens and military members. Settlers that accepted often faced raids by local Indians. French settlers in Louisiana supported these raids by supplying guns and ammunition.

Over time, priests founded fewer missions in Texas than in other Spanish settlements. Spain paid for priests’ travel and materials to build the missions. The missions were promised to protect the American Indians from harsh treatment or slavery by settlers. They also were to protect American Indians from raids by other tribes. The priests brought with them irrigation systems and more intensive farming practices. They wanted to convert the Indians to Christianity and have them live and work within the mission system. But in Texas the non-European residents, both Mexican and Indian, had lived in the area for centuries. They had their own languages, their own cultures, and their own trading partnerships. They often had no love for the Spanish intruders.
