INTRODUCTION Imagine that you are stationed in the trenches in Europe during World War I. You have seen firsthand the terrible conditions in the trenches. You are tired of all the fighting, the killing, and the desperation on the faces of your fellow comrades. Suddenly you feel lonely and homesick.

THE TASK
• Pretend that you are a soldier or perhaps a nurse/doctor during WWI. Write a 1 page letter home to your family, telling them about your experiences in the trenches in Europe.
• Your letter may be typed (using cursive italics font) and single-spaced or hand written.

THE CONTENT
The letter will be based on daily life in the trenches and must include the following elements:

1. The date you wrote the letter (you can write no earlier than January, 1915, pick a date before or after a battle).

2. Include a greeting (Dear ,)

3. Where you are in Europe:
-For the battle of Ypres, you are stationed in Ypres, Belgium
-For the battle of the Somme, you are stationed in La Boisselle, France
-For the battle of Vimy Ridge, you are stationed in Vimy, France
-For the battle of Passchendaele, you are stationed in Passchendaele, Belgium

4. In the first paragraph, describe at least four specific details/facts about conditions in the trenches (you can talk about lice, rats, food, trench foot, gas attacks, mud, water, weapons being used etc.)

5. In the second paragraph, discuss how you, in your role, feel about the war.

6. In the third paragraph, write about what you miss the most about home while you are at war
7. In the fourth paragraph, include requests you have of your family (i. e. to send snacks over).

8. Include a sign-off in your letter (Love, Warm Wishes, etc.) and your name.

9. Use proper spelling, grammar, and sentence structure – edit your work!
