Ancient egyptians were aware of the yearly floods of the  Nile, as they could  observe the rise and fall of the waters. Being able to foresee this, they  started to develop an irrigation method that would take advantage  of the floodings, the basin irrigation method, which consisted  on dividing the land into large fields and enclosing them with dams , and flow canals. These basins were flooded and closed  for a month and a half approximately, in order to allow the silt to deposit.  After that, the water was moved to another field or back into the river.  Once the soil was fertile, thanks to the silt, planting and harvesting followed. This was the only  time when farming was possible, as it could not be done during the dry season.
