The Ottoman Empire was a huge Turkish empire, founded by Ottoman I at the beginning of the 14th century and ruled by the Ottoman dynasty until Turkey as a republic was founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1923 after the First World War. The empire was most powerful in the 16th century under Sultan Süleyman the Great. However, it had the greatest extent in 1683, when it stretched from Vienna in the west, through the Middle East and North Africa, to present-day Iran and the Arabian Peninsula in the east. Although the empire was large, it had only about 40 million inhabitants.
