Also when you have a single ruler, people may not be happy with the ruler because they didn't choose them. Divine right is the idea that the person was chosen by the gods to rule over the land but not everybody agrees with the same thing which could anger people. If the ruler is a bad ruler this will also make people even more mad. Usually people enjoy choosing the leader because 1. They have a say in government (sort of) and 2.
