During this time, Great Britain was enacting numerous unfair laws on the colonists. These laws were called the Townshend Acts and consisted of taxes on items like paper, tea, glass, and other things the colonists used. The colonists deemed this unfair as they had nobody in the British Parliament to vouch for them. This is known as "taxation without representation."

The relationship between the colonists and Great Britain was not good at this time and many of the colonists were angered by the presence of British troops. The colonists were throwing sticks, stones, and even snowballs at the British soldiers after an argument, which caused more colonists to go to the scene. Tensions were high between the two, but finally, something was thrown by the colonists which caused the British troops to fire.

Multiple British troops and civilians were arrested after the Boston Massacre. Some soldiers were tried for murder, but some people argued they were trying to defend themselves from the mob. John Adams was very influential in this case and wanted the British soldiers to have a fair trial and even defended them. This made a lot of people begin to dislike John Adams and think he was siding with the British.

Some troops were eventually found guilty and many of the colonists were hurt and confused. Some people who were loyal to Great Britain before decided to change sides and become Patriots.
