Haden Edwards went to the Cherokee leaders to ask for their support against the Mexican army that was coming to stop him and his brother from declaring Fredonia an independent republic. Initially, the Cherokee agreed to help the Edwards brothers; however, the Mexican army sent Peter Ellis Bean to renegotiate with the Cherokee. The Cherokee leaders changed their minds and agreed to stay out of the conflict. The Cherokee never actually entered the dispute.
