Conflict between Muslims and Christians in Nigeria since 1999 is part of the wider conflagration of islamist violence that has been plaguing the world since the 1950's and grown to include conflicts in Iraq, Afganistan, Somalia, and much of the middle east and parts of Asia. Much of this violence is fueled by Islamic fundamentalism, but in Nigeria is also fueled by access to oil wealth. this has led to armed conflict and the weak, corrupt government of Nigeria has been unable to completely quell the violence. Thousands of Nigerians have died in this violence over the last 18 years.
