Why were the colonies established in Nova Scotia and north of the St. Lawrence River called "New France"? The colonies were settled by French colonists. "New France sounded like the Native American name for the region "Nuvaferrence." The land was similar to land in France. British colonists sought to make fun of their French rivals.
