The emperor then had his loyal players knock the general off his horse and beat him repeatedly around the head and chest area with their polo sticks. This was the emperor's way of warning other traitors not to follow the general's lead. By doing so would lead to their untimely death as well. If it was to look like an accident the repeated beating would not have been possible. A less public killing would only have gotten rid of the general and his plans. Therefore, this very public death was used as a warning to others.
