The war that Erasmus was referencing in his letter was the war in the Church that concerned the many indulgences of the Catholic church.

Erasmus was not in agreement with the way that things were being done in the Catholic church. He was in agreement with Martin Luther who disagreed with the church.

Erasmus attacked the church for the way they were conducting activities, for taking money from people to forgive their sins, for the concept of purgatory. He was concerned with reformations in the church so he criticized the church.
