The 1880 and 1890s, were years of unprecedented technological innovation, mass immigration, and intense political partisanship, including disputes over currency, tariffs, political corruption and patronage, and railroads and business trusts

In the late 19th century, the United States began to change from a rural nation to an urban one. The Industrial Revolution contributed greatly to this trend, and led to the creation of great wealth, much of which rested in the hands of a few individuals. This period in U.S. history became known as the Gilded Age.
