The Chicano civil rights movement also known as the El Moviemento was a quest for liberation from the gradual assimilation and imbibement of the cultural values of the Americans instead of the true culture of the Mexicans. This movement ran concurrently with the Black Movement which was a quest for safety and self-sufficiency by the African-Americans. Different groups had their unique roles in this movement.

1. The MAYO group consisted mainly of students who protested racial discrimination through mass walk-outs, protests, and direct confrontation. They made use of the pages of the newspapers to express their views which attracted a level of disdain from the public.

2. Partido Nacional de La Raza Unida was a Mexican political group that campaigned for the Chicano movement seeking liberation though a 'get out the vote' strategy and grassroots mobilization for unity method.

3. The LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) movement used the litigation strategy to fight for the rights of the Mexican Citizens.
