Dorothy Vaughan was an American mathematician who was instrumental in the World War II. She worked for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and ensured proper supervision of people working in her department.

She helped in the war by her ability to work on complex calculations regarding flight path and computing aeronautical research data. This helped to accurately attack the enemy and achieve a high success rate.
