Why did Phillis Wheatley publish her book of poems first in England? John Wheatley believed that publishers would pay better in England. The publisher in London allowed Wheatley to write her own preface. The Wheatleys were too embarrassed to let Phillis publish in America. No publisher in the colonies was interested in a slave's writing.
