The Scramble for Africa, also known as the Partition of Africa or the Conquest of Africa, was European powers invading, dividing and colonising African territory from 1881 to 1914. This was because these European colonisers wanted the valuable natural resources found in Africa, wanted to carry on expanding their nation for pride and prestige, to rival other European powers, and in an effort to convert Africans to Christianity (through missionaries). The Europeans partitioned Africa and divided it among themselves as a way to stop themselves going to war with each other over it.

This was a significant event, as it signalled the change from "informal imperialism" - i.e. exercising military influence, showing off military superiority, economic dominance - to direct rule, or "colonial imperialism".
