Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist (Nazi Party) was rising to power, economically and politically in Germany. They had rearmed the nation and they signed treaties with Italy and Japan to further his ambitions of world domination. Adolf Hitler’s invasion of Poland in September of 1939 just pushed Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany, and then World War II had begun. Over the next six years, the conflict had taken more lives and destroyed more land and property around the globe than any previous war. Among the estimated 45-60 million people killed, there were about 6 million Jews murdered in Nazi concentration camps as part of Hitler’s diabolical “Final Solution,” known as the Holocaust.

The horrible devastation of WWI had greatly thrown Europe off balance, and in many respects, WWII grew out of the issues that were left unresolved by that earlier conflict. In particular, political and economic instability in Germany, and lingering resentment over the harsh terms imposed by the Versailles Treaty, fueled the rise to power of Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist (Nazi) Party.
