What is known as the American Dream is the idea that any person, no matter how poor they are born, can become wealthy and successful, as long as they put in hard work, and take good decisions in life.

This idea is partly true, and partly not true.

It is partly true because the United States is a country that does have high social mobility. Social mobility is the ability of poor people to improve their economic condition and become part of the middle class, or even the upper class.

However, the idea is also wrong in the sense that not all poor people become middle class later in life, in many cases they are stuck in porverty for their whole lives.
