Get your news from as many different sources as you can and look for contradictions. Trust no single source. Typically, the stories that appear once and vanish are most likely to be false.

And unfortunately, most news sources don't give you the back story. You have to follow the news for years or even decades and look things up as you go before you can put together the full picture. Watch all TV news channels, read as many articles online as you can find. Nearly everything is interconnected. Except for sports. Sports is probably the most isolated.
