In Plessy vs. Ferguson, the Supreme Court ruled that segregation was allowed in America so long as “seperate but equal” facilities were built for people of different races. Separate but equal means two (or more) different facilities that allow and deny the same freedoms, i.e none is better then the other, and did not violate the 14th amendment. An example of this is when a school involved in a decision of accepting a young male black student was told by the court that they must accept, and there was no reason to make him go  to an (equal- but separate) black school
