The word Suribachi was an actual message transmitted by the code talkers during an important battle in World War II. The message relayed by the code talkers let the Allied commanders know that US Marines had taken Mount Suribachi. This was a turning point in the battle and in the war itself. Once the marines gained a foothold on Mount Suribachi, they were able to take the rest of the island, destroying the Japanese stronghold there. In this activity, you will use sections from the “Navajo Code Talkers’ Dictionary” to decode and encode your own messages.
Part A
You must tell your commander that a scout is attacking an enemy fortification with grenades. Using the “Navajo Code Talkers' Dictionary,” write your message in both Navajo and English.
Part B
After you sent your message, the commander responded with the following message:
Reinforcement of hummingbird squash is in fox light.
What does he mean? Consult the “Navajo Code Talkers' Dictionary” to decode the message.
