This article describes American public opinion concerning the war in Vietnam from 1964 to 1973. Following an introduction and a discussion of methodological issues regarding wartime public opinion, we review the flow of opinion about Vietnam, both in the aggregate and for various demographically defined sub-groups. We measure support and opposition to the war using both a broad "mistake" question and more specific policy questions. We examine differences revealed by these questions for age, sex, race, religious belief, social status and political party affiliation. Finally, we explore the possibility that the war in Vietnam altered the relationship of foreign policy-making elites and the general public.
