What was the Bessemer steel converter? How did this invention chaps U. S. history?

The Bessemer steel converter was an invention that removed impurities from the iron by oxidation and air being blown through the molten iron. This invention shaped U.S. history because it was a new way to create steel faster and for less money and it allowed cities to be able to afford skyscrapers. It also lead the U.S. into the industrial world.

the tariff was created to protect industry in the northern part of the united states. industries in the north were being driven out of business by imported goods that were priced at a low rate. the goal was to protect these industries   by taxing the goods.
