What caused World War 1 to begin?

The cause for World War 1 was the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his pregnant wife Sophie. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was the nephew of Emperor Franz Josef and heir to the throne of Austria and Hungary.

Nationalism caused many small countries to rebelled against imperialism and seek their independence. A focus on militarism meant that they have the means to cause great harm. The final event that led to the beginning of war was the assassination of Austria-Hungary's Archduke Ferdinand. Once Austria declare war on Serbia, the alliances that had been agreed to over the proceeding years obligated several other countries to go to war.
