Dawes Act

Explanation:

The Dawes Act which was passed in 1887 essentially broke up all of the Native Americans land into small pieces and were distributed randomly among the country, with any left over land auctioned off to white people who had the money to pay.

It allowed the president to break up reservation land, which was held in common by the members of a tribe, into small allotments to be parceled out to individuals. Thus, Native Americans registering on a tribal "roll" were granted allotments of reservation land.

The objective of the Dawes Act was to assimilate Native American Indians into mainstream US society by annihilating their cultural and social traditions.
