What was Lucy's attitude toward working in the
mill?
This reading comes from Lucy Larcom, a mill
worker in the late 1800s.
She felt it was an enjoyable career that could
last a lifetime
She hoped to have a long career as a mill
worker.
She was happy that her work at the mill
would only last a short while.
She felt that working at a mill was a good
thing for a child.
There were compensations for being shut in
to daily toil so early. The mill itself had its
lessons for us. But it was not, and could not
be, the right sort of life for a child, and we
were happy in the knowledge that, at the
longest, our employment was only to be
temporary.
