What did Soviet leaders expect would happen to
communism and capitalism over time?

Soviet leaders assumed capitalism would destroy itself in its endless quest to consume and create and that communism would eventually become the dominant ideology. This way of thinking is called Trotskyism and was founded by Leon Trotsky in the 1800s.
