How did early African's keep their culture?

Well even though they did go through the roughest time because they were forced as slaves they did still have their ways to somehow keep their culture alive. They managed to keep the culture alive because old journals found from escaped slaves say that even though they were slaves some of them would gather up by a fire if allowed by their owners and they would sing.
