He became head of state after the declaration of the Indonesian Republic in 1945. The Netherlands did not recognize the independence of its colony of the Netherlands East Indies, and intervened militarily. Sukarno was arrested in late 1948 and returned to power after the Indonesian-Dutch agreement was signed in June 1949 when Indonesia became sovereign state. He was elected President in 1963, but was discharged from office in 1967, two years after General Suharto's military coup.
