The Boer Wars (or Liberation Wars in Boer historiography) is the name given to the two conflicts between the United Kingdom and the two independent Boer republics, the Free State of Orange and the South African Republic (Republic of Transvaal). The two conflicts occurred, respectively, from December 16, 1880 to March 23, 1881 and from October 11, 1899 to May 31, 1902.

At the heart of the conflict is the gradual British expansion across southern Africa, into territories previously occupied by descendants of former Dutch settlers. Unlike most other warehouses of the Dutch East India Company, settlers settled in that part of the globe (most Dutch, but not the entire group, which still included French, Germans and other ethnic groups). Such settlers had the real objective of occupying and inhabiting the areas in which they resided, unlike many other points in the Dutch empire, and even the Cape colony, which were practically mere warehouses where individuals spent a certain time before migrating to another point and continuing mercantile activity. So much so that the word "boer" means "farmer", "cultivator", and it was not applied to all the colonists of the Cape, only those who were inland, on the eastern border of the colony.
