In part because of his education background, in part because of political pragmatism, Mahatma Ghandi opted for non-violence as his preferred method of protest against the British colonial rule in India.  Armed rebellion or a long guerrilla war was not a viable alternative in the post-WWI India. Pacific protest was more effective: it was legitimate, it was moral for an oppressed people to rebel and it stirred worldwide sympathy and solidarity. In the long run, it proved to brong better results that an uprising.
