personally, i do not think that columbus day should be celebrated in the united states every year. i understand that columbus’s voyage was the first european expedition to the caribbean, central america and to south america. but he technically wasn’t the one to discover north america. in history, we have been taught and shown that christopher columbus was less of a heroic figure and more of an antagonist towards the natives. he brought disease, wars and lots of death to the current day united states.

when columbus came to america, his people brought small-pox and many other diseases along with them. this caused the native people’s populations to become drastically sick and having to experience new diseases which caused lots of them to die and their populations to go down. besides the exportation of foods and goods to the new world, he still brought over diseases which affected the natives drastically. one of the big reasons why i do not think columbus day should be celebrated is because he was not the first person to discover north america. the holiday is typically viewed as more of a day to celebrate colonialism and is offensive to the continents indigenous people who were there before. columbus was also a slave owner and a tyrant. so, why should we celebrate someone who mistreated the native people in our land or even the people less fortunate. when columbus traveled the land, he forcefully took it over. he caused mass genocide, and unnecessarily killed lots of native people just to take over the land and colonize the new world.

another federal holiday that i don’t think we should celebrate is george washington’s birthday. this is mostly because i didn’t even know that we celebrated his birthday. personally, i just do not see why we need to celebrate the birthday of two presidents. it is a day to remember past presidents but we as american people shouldn’t get any benefits from it like having work benefits, school cancellations or things of the like.
