According to bartolomé de las casas: what does it mean to be cilivlized?

Bartolome de Las Casas advocate for the salvation of the native Americans during the Spanish conquest of the Caribbean islands. The suffering and the massacre perpetrated by the Spanish crown as seen not only as a crime but a terrible sin, according to de Las Casas. To him, natives were humans and could be controlled by religion, and not by violence. De Las Casas believed that to be civilized was to care about the other, to look at the other as a person, with feelings and soul, to protect their lives, and to share the Christian values.
