The Cherokee are a tribe of North American Indians, originally descending from the Iroquois and inhabiting the foothills, western areas of South and North Carolina, northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee. Later, most of its members were forcibly relocated to the Ozark Plateau. They were one of the tribes included in the group of Five Civilized Tribes.

According to the 2010 census, they were the largest Indian tribe in the United States.

After the discovery of gold in Georgia in 1838, they were forced to leave their territory and go to the Indian Territory in today's state of Oklahoma, where many of them still live today.

A small group of Cherokee refused to go to Oklahoma and fled to the mountains on the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. After many battles and peace talks, they were granted a certain area of land (today Qualla Reserve in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina).
