This increased output needed large markets and supply facilities and thus new businesses like transportation, retail outlets, etc., grew tremendously. The factories started running out of labor and hence, they started hiring small children at cheap wages. The people who migrated to industrial areas started living in slums. The working hours were increased and the health conditions of the workers deteriorated. The overall effect of the second industrial revolution was negative.
